Live COVID-19 updates: Russia's COVID-19 cases surpass 674,000

BEIJING, July 4 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MOSCOW -- Russia added 6,632 COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, raising its total number of infections to 674,515, its coronavirus response center said in a statement Saturday.

The death toll grew by 168 to 10,027, while 446,879 people have now recovered, including 8,986 over the last 24 hours, according to the statement.

JERUSALEM -- The Israeli border police chief tested positive for the novel coronavirus, the police said in a statement on Saturday.

The health condition of Yaakov Shabtai is good, the police statement said, adding an epidemiologic investigation is being conducted to find out the contacts with him for home quarantine.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection reported on Saturday 11 imported cases of COVID-19, taking the total number of confirmed cases in Hong Kong to 1,258.

The newly reported cases involve six men and five women aged between 28 and 62. All patients had a travel history during the incubation period.

YANGON -- Seven new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Myanmar, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 313 as of Saturday, according to latest figures released by the Health and Sports Ministry.

The newly confirmed cases were returnees who are under facility quarantine in Yangon region after their recent arrivals from India, Bangladesh, Laos, Thailand and Singapore, the ministry's release said.

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Health Ministry on Saturday confirmed 2,334 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections nationwide to 58,354.

The ministry also reported 106 more deaths, raising the death toll from the infectious virus to 2,368 in the country.

It also said that 1,477 people recovered during the day, bringing the total recoveries from the disease to 31,077.

NEW YORK -- China appears to have gotten a second wave of COVID-19 under control following an outbreak at a sprawling Beijing produce market last month, an article published by Time magazine has said.

The article published on Thursday quoted Zhang Wenhong, head of Shanghai's COVID-19 clinical experts team, as saying that "Beijing has set a clear example that China will ward off a new wave of infections -- domestic or imported -- through a prompt and refined epidemic control response." Enditem
