RAMALLAH, July 4 (Xinhua) -- Palestine on Saturday announced 561 new COVID-19 cases, the highest single-day increase since the outbreak of the pandemic in the Palestinian territories in March.

The new cases brought the total number of COVID-19 cases in Palestine to 4,250, said the Palestinian Health Ministry.

The majority of the cases were found in the southern West Bank district of Hebron, the largest district in the West Bank, which has become the new epicenter of COVID-19 pandemic in Palestine.

The pandemic resurgence was a result of contacts mainly with Palestinians from inside Israel or workers in Israel, according to Palestinian medical experts.

The ministry said that 16 Palestinians have died so far, adding that there are 3,597 active cases, of which 2,576 are in Hebron district.

Palestine has renewed a lockdown of the West Bank territory for five days amid a new spike in the novel coronavirus cases in the territory.

China has helped Palestine in its fight against COVID-19 outbreak.

On April 20, China handed over a batch of medical supplies to Palestine. In mid-April, Palestine received a shipment of medical aid donated by China's Alibaba company.

Since April 14, Chinese doctors and medical experts have held three video conferences via the internet with Palestinian counterparts to share the Chinese experience in containing the coronavirus outbreak. Enditem
