Live COVID-19 updates: Iran's COVID-19 cases nudge 240,000, Saudi Arabia records 2nd most cases in Mideast

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

CAIRO -- The total number of COVID-19 cases approached 240,000 in Iran on Saturday. Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia surpassed Turkey in the tally of coronavirus infections with nearly 206,000 confirmed cases.

Iran, the hardest-hit country by the COVID-19 pandemic in the Middle East region, reported 2,449 new cases, brining the total number of infections to 237,878.

The country also reported 148 new deaths from the virus, raising the death toll to 11,408. A total of 198,949 coronavirus patients have recovered, with 3,136 still in critical condition.

Saudi Arabia announced 4,128 new cases and 56 more deaths, raising the total number of confirmed cases to 205,929 and the death toll to 1,858.

The kingdom also reported 2,642 more recovered patients, taking the total recoveries to 143,256.

DUBAI -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Saturday announced 716 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 50,857.

UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention said in a statement the new cases include many nationalities. All are in a stable condition and receiving medical treatment.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health (MOH) reported 185 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 44,664.

Of the new cases, one is an imported case, nine are community cases and the rest are linked with the dormitories of foreign workers.

NAIROBI -- Kenya on Saturday recorded 389 positive COVID-19 cases, the highest daily number of infections ever recorded since the virus was reported in the country on March 13 this year.

Cyrus Oguna, the government spokesperson, said in a statement that the figure now brings the total number of positive cases in the country to 7,577 from cumulative tests of 185,035 samples.

LONDON -- Another 67 COVID-19 patients have died in Britain as of Friday afternoon, bringing the total coronavirus-related death toll in the country to 44,198, the British Department of Health and Social Care said Saturday.

The figures include deaths in all settings, including hospitals, care homes and the wider community. Enditem
