Live COVID-19 updates: S. Africa reports over 10,000 confirmed cases in past 24 hours

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

CAPE TOWN -- South Africa reported 10,853 confirmed COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, the highest single-day surge since the outbreak, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize said early Sunday.

With the new infections, the total number of confirmed cases has jumped to 187,977, Mkhize said in his update.

Meanwhile, the total number of deaths related with the virus has reached 3,026, of which 74 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, Mkhize said.

ZAGREB -- Croatian voters started casting their ballots in parliamentary elections at 7 a.m. local time (0500 GMT) on Sunday.

Over 3.8 million eligible voters will elect 151 members of parliament by secret ballot to four-year terms.

The elections are seen as the most challenging in the country's history as the number of new COVID-19 cases hit a record high this week after the easing of lockdown measures and reopening of borders. Voters are advised to attend poll stations with masks and bring their own pencils.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 1,607 within one day to 63,749, with the death toll adding by 82 to 3,171, Achmad Yurianto, a Health Ministry official, said at a press conference here on Sunday.

He also said that 886 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 29,105.

BEIJING -- China's food delivery market saw rapid expansion in the first half of this year as more people chose to order food online in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19, an industry report showed.

Food delivery is estimated to account for about 20 percent of China's catering industry in 2020, said the report released by the Meituan Research Institute and the China Hospitality Association.

MOSCOW -- Russia recorded 6,736 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 681,251, the country's coronavirus response center said in a statement Sunday.

The death toll rose by 134 to 10,161, while 450,750 people have recovered, including 3,871 over the last 24 hours, said the statement. Enditem
