Live COVID-19 updates: Iran's cases top 240,000, Palestine extends state of emergency again

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TEHRAN -- Iran's confirmed coronavirus cases rose to 240,438 on Sunday after an overnight registration of 2,560 new infections, state-run IRNA news agency reported.

The COVIND-19 pandemic has so far claimed the lives of 11,571 Iranians, up by 163 in the past 24 hours.

Besides, 201,330 have recovered and been discharged from hospitals while 3,168 remain in critical condition. Iran reported its first confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Feb. 19.

RAMALLAH -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday declared an extension of the state of emergency by 30 days in the Palestinian territories in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

It was the fourth time for Abbas issued a presidential degree to extend the state of emergency in combating COVID-19.

On Sunday afternoon, Palestine announced 208 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in the Palestinian territories up to 4,458, with 19 deaths.

MANILA -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 44,254 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,434 new cases on Sunday, the country's biggest number of single-day infections so far.

"As the country continues to ease community quarantine measures, the rise in the number of cases today may be attributed to the increased contact among the population," the DOH said in a statement.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries rose to 11,942 after 489 more patients survived the disease. The death toll increased to 1,297 after seven more patients succumbed to the viral disease.

BANGKOK -- Thailand's Ministry of Transport reported on Sunday that it has instructed all public and private transport services to disinfect the vehicles regularly to stem the spread of COVID-19 while accommodating vacationers during a four-day Buddhist public holiday from July 4 to 7.

The ministry's state bus operator The Transport Co. Ltd also said all bus terminals nationwide will be cleaned regularly, including toilets and benches.

DHAKA -- The death toll from COVID-19 in Bangladesh has surpassed 2,000, a health official said Sunday.

Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana said at a briefing on Sunday afternoon that 2,738 new cases and 55 more deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, bringing the death toll in the country to 2,052 and total cases to 162,417.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported five new COVID-19 infections on Sunday, the health ministry said, bringing the national total to 8,663.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that of the new cases, three are imported and two are local transmissions.

Another four cases were released from hospital, bringing the number of recoveries to 8,465, or 97.7 percent of all cases. No new death was reported, leaving the death toll at 121.

ACCRA -- Ghanaian President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has gone into a 14-day self-isolation after one of his closes associates tested positive for the novel coronavirus, a statement has said.

The statement signed by the Minister for Information Kojo Oppong-Nkrumah late Saturday said Akufo-Addo decided to take the precautionary measure in compliance with the COVID-19 protocols.

The statement added that the president's initial test result on Saturday was negative.

BEIJING -- China's food delivery market saw rapid expansion in the first half of this year as more people chose to order food online in an effort to curb the spread of COVID-19, an industry report showed.

Food delivery is estimated to account for about 20 percent of China's catering industry in 2020, said the report released by the Meituan Research Institute and the China Hospitality Association.

MOSCOW -- Russia recorded 6,736 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 681,251, the country's coronavirus response center said in a statement Sunday.

The death toll rose by 134 to 10,161, while 450,750 people have recovered, including 3,871 over the last 24 hours, said the statement. Enditem
