Live COVID-19 updates: Single-digit cases for 7th day in Beijing, no virus death so far in Vietnam

BEIJING, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BEIJING -- Beijing had reported single-digit COVID-19 cases for seven consecutive days by Saturday, local authorities said Sunday.

The number of newly confirmed COVID-19 cases reached a peak in Beijing on June 13 and 14 and then started declining in general, local officials told a press briefing.

From June 11 to July 4, the city reported 334 confirmed locally transmitted cases, 47 percent of whom are workers of the Xinfadi food market, according to the press conference.

HANOI -- Vietnam reported no new cases of COVID-19 infection on Sunday, with its total confirmed cases remaining at 355 with zero deaths so far, according to the Ministry of Health.

As many as 340 patients in the country have totally recovered from the disease, the ministry said.

Vietnam has recorded no local transmission for 80 straight days, while there are nearly 11,500 people being quarantined and monitored in the country, according to a report by Vietnam News Agency.

KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait on Sunday reported 638 new COVID-19 cases and three more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 49,941 and the death toll to 368, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Currently, 9,110 patients are receiving treatment, including 157 in ICU, the statement added.

The ministry also announced the recovery of 520 more patients, raising the total recoveries in the country to 40,463.

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN -- Brunei reported no new cases of COVID-19 on Sunday with the national tally standing at 141.

It marked the 59th consecutive day without new cases since May 7.

There have been three deaths from COVID-19 in Brunei and a total of 138 patients have recovered.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) on Sunday reported 10 additional confirmed cases of the COVID-19 pandemic, including two local cases and eight imported cases.

The additional cases brought the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong to 1,268.

This is the first time since June 13 that local cases are reported in Hong Kong.

TEHRAN -- Iran's confirmed coronavirus cases rose to 240,438 on Sunday after an overnight registration of 2,560 new infections, state-run IRNA news agency reported.

The COVIND-19 pandemic has so far claimed the lives of 11,571 Iranians, up by 163 in the past 24 hours.

Besides, 201,330 have recovered and been discharged from hospitals while 3,168 remain in critical condition. Iran reported its first confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Feb. 19.

RAMALLAH -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on Sunday declared an extension of the state of emergency by 30 days in the Palestinian territories in a bid to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.

It was the fourth time for Abbas issued a presidential degree to extend the state of emergency in combating COVID-19.

On Sunday afternoon, Palestine announced 208 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total number of COVID-19 cases in the Palestinian territories up to 4,458, with 19 deaths. Enditem
