MONTEVIDEO, July 5 (Xinhua) -- The remainder of this year's Copa Libertadores - suspended since March because of the coronavirus pandemic - could be held in Uruguay, according to local media reports.

The South American Football Confederation is in advanced talks about the proposal with the Uruguayan Football Association and government officials, the Ovacion news outlet reported.

The plan would see clubs stay in separate hotels, with training and matches to be conducted under strict sanitary protocols, reports said.

Uruguay is among Latin America's least affected countries by the pandemic with less than 1,000 confirmed cases and 28 deaths.

The Copa Libertadores was halted in mid-March after the tournament's second matchday. CONMEBOL has said that it aims to restart South America's premier club competition in September when it also hopes to begin the region's 2022 World Cup qualifiers. Enditem
