NEW YORK, July 8 (Xinhua) -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed the 3 million mark Wednesday to reach 3,009,611 as of 11:34 a.m. local time (1534 GMT), according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

Meanwhile, the national death toll from the disease rose to 131,594, according to the CSSE.

New York state remains the hardest-hit with 398,237 cases and 32,243 fatalities. Other states with over 100,000 cases include California, Florida, Texas, New Jersey, Illinois, Massachusetts, Arizona and Georgia, the CSSE data showed.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the country's top infectious disease expert, said Monday that the status of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country is "really not good."

However, U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday rebuked Fauci's assessment, saying the country "is in a good place."

"We've done a good job," the president said at an interview on Gray Television. "I think we are going to be in two, three, four weeks, by the time we next speak, I think we're going to be in very good shape." Enditem
