NUR-SULTAN, July 9 (Xinhua) -- Kazakhstan reported 1,962 new COVID-19 cases over the past day, setting a fresh record for new cases reported in a single day, according to state news agency Kazinform on Thursday.

As of Thursday, Kazakhstan has registered 53,021 confirmed cases and 264 deaths, with 34,931 recoveries, according to Kazinform.

In a televised speech on Wednesday night, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokaev said the country is facing a second coronavirus wave coupled with a huge uptick in pneumonia cases.

Tokayev said the epidemic is still serious and it is still too early to relax restrictions. He appealed to the public not to panic and stockpile medicines.

Tokaev also declared July 13 as the national mourning day for victims of the pandemic.

The Central Asian country imposed a second nationwide lockdown since July 5 as COVID-19 cases soar. Enditem
