ADEN, Yemen, July 10 (Xinhua) -- Two Yemenis were killed on Friday in an explosion caused by a landmine laid previously by the Houthi rebels in Yemen's Red Sea port city of Hodeidah, a government official told Xinhua.

According to the local government official, who asked to remain anonymous, "an explosion of a Houthi-laid landmine killed two citizens and destroyed their motorcycles south of Hodeidah."

"The explosion struck the citizens who were riding motorcycles to the public market in Al Khawkhah district," the source said.

He added that experts had arrived in the area where the blast occurred and began dismantling the landmines laid by Houthis during the past years.

The Houthi-laid landmines and improvised explosive devices continue to pose a threat to the civilians despite the ongoing efforts in the mine-clearing projects in Yemen.

Previous reports by humanitarian organizations said Yemen has become one of the largest landmine battlefields in the world since World War II.

The Iran-allied Houthi rebels seized the northern provinces including the capital Sanaa in late 2014, forcing Yemen's President Abdu-Rabbu Mansour Hadi and his government into exile. Enditem
