KUNDUZ, Afghanistan -- Two Afghan soldiers and five Taliban militants were killed and 11 people from the two sides were wounded during pre-dawn clashes in northern Kunduz province, a local official said on Wednesday.

"The clashes erupted after Taliban militants stormed joint Afghan army and police checkpoint in Qarghaz locality of Iamam Sahib district early Wednesday. Five security force members and six militants were wounded during the fighting," district chief Mahbubullah Sayyedi told Xinhua. (Afghanistan-Taliban-Attack)

JAKARTA -- The death toll from flash floods in Indonesia's South Sulawesi province rose to 16 on Wednesday with 23 people missing, local media reported.

ABUJA -- Nigeria's first-ever female combat helicopter pilot Tolulope Arotile died on Tuesday as a result of head injuries sustained in a road traffic accident in the northwestern state of Kaduna, according to the Nigeria Air Force (NAF).

Arotile, in her 20s, contributed to the efforts to rid the Nigerian north-central region of armed groups by flying several combat missions, said a terse official statement. (Nigeria-First Female Pilot-Accident) Enditem
