Live COVID-19 updates: Number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in Germany exceeds 200,800

BEIJING, July 17 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BERLIN -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 infections in Germany now stands at 200,843, after an increase of 583 in the last 24 hours, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) announced Friday.

The last time that new daily infections were above 500 was two weeks ago, according to the RKI, the federal government agency for disease control and prevention. What's more, at the height of the pandemic in Germany, more than 6,000 daily infections had been recorded.

KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait on Friday reported 553 new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 58,221 and the death toll to 404, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Currently, 9,436 patients are receiving treatment, including 143 in ICU, the statement added.

The ministry also announced the recovery of 836 more patients, raising the total recoveries in the country to 48,381.

TEHRAN -- Iran's confirmed novel coronavirus cases rose to 269,440 on Friday after an overnight registration of 2,379 new infections, according to official IRNA news agency.

During her daily briefing, Sima Sadat Lari, the spokeswoman for Iran's Ministry of Health and Medical Education, said out of the new cases in the past 24 hours, 1,852 were hospitalized.

The pandemic has so far claimed the lives of 13,791 Iranians, up by 183 in the past 24 hours, she said.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported 58 additional confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Friday, including 50 local infections.

The newly-reported cases brought the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Hong Kong to 1,713.

Out of the 50 local infections, 32 are related to the previously confirmed cases, while the source of infection of the other 18 cases remain unknown, Chuang Shuk-kwan, head of the CHP's Communicable Disease Branch said at a media briefing on Friday afternoon.

TBILISI -- Georgia reported four new COVID-19 cases on Friday, taking its total to 1,010, according to the National Centre for Disease Control and Public Health (NCDC).

One of the four new cases is imported, while the other three were detected among those quarantined, the NCDC said.

As of Friday, 885 of the 1,010 patients have recovered, while 15 others have died, the center said.

TAIPEI -- Two people tested positive for COVID-19 in Taiwan Friday, raising the island's total number of COVID-19 cases to 454, the local epidemic monitoring agency said.

The new patients, a woman in her 20s and a man in his 40s, both returned from the Philippines Wednesday, the agency said in a press release.
