JAKARTA -- Flash floods and landslides in Indonesia's South Sulawesi province have claimed 36 lives and seriously damaged houses and infrastructures, while over 3,000 people were forced to flee home, a disaster agency reported on Friday.

The death toll of the natural disaster which struck Luwu Utara district early this week climbed to 36 people on Friday with 16 others still missing, said spokesman for the National Disaster Management Agency Raditya Jati. (Indonesia-Flash floods-Death toll)

TOKYO -- Japanese Defense Minister Taro Kono said on Friday that he has called on the United States to conduct coronavirus testing on all U.S. military personnel coming to Japan after outbreaks of the virus have hit U.S. bases in the southernmost prefecture of Okinawa.

Kono told a press briefing on the matter that the defense ministry has requested that U.S. military personnel bound for Japan take one test prior to leaving the United States and one upon arrival in Japan. (Japan-U.S.-Military personnel-COVID-19)

NEW DELHI -- The number of COVID-19 cases in India surpassed one million on Friday, as total deaths crossed 25,000, according to the latest data issued by federal health ministry.

The ministry said 687 new deaths due to COVID-19 and 34,956 new cases were reported during the past 24 hours across the country, bringing the death toll to 25,602 and total cases to 1,003,832. (India-COVID-19 cases)

MANILA -- The number of the COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 63,001 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,841 new cases on Friday.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries further rose to 21,748 after 311 more patients have survived the disease. The death toll also increased to 1,660 after 17 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, the DOH said. (Philippines-Pandemic) Enditem
