QUITO, July 17 (Xinhua) -- Jordi Cruyff has asked for time away to consider his future as head coach of Ecuador's national team, the president of the South American country's football federation said on Friday.

Cruyff is currently in Spain, having left Ecuador in mid-March amid the escalating coronavirus outbreak.

"I received a message from him [Cruyff] from Madrid," Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) chief Francisco Egas told the Area Deportivo radio station on Friday.

"He asked me for two days to think. That bothered me a lot and the [the situation] needs to be resolved," he added.

Cruyff, the son of Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff, has yet to lead Ecuador in an official match, having taken charge of the national team in January.

Doubts about the 46-year-old's continuation with the Tricolor coincide with internal ructions within the FEF.

Egas was removed from his post in April following a censure motion that questioned his handling of FEF's finances. He was reinstated this month after the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) intervened in the case.

Instability within the FEF escalated this week when Spaniard Antonio Cordon quit his post as the national team's sporting director.

Cruyff, a former Barcelona midfielder who was capped nine times for the Netherlands, turned to management in 2009 and spent two years in charge of Chinese Super League club Chongqing Dangdai Lifan before joining Ecuador. Enditem
