JAKARTA, July 18 (Xinhua) -- Floods and landslides that occurred in Sorong district in Indonesia's province of West Papua on Thursday had killed five people, a local authority said on Saturday.

"The five people who died are Afandi Hataul, Jafar Kalbarin, Isak Ananisa Wakum, Maisuna and Alex Ginuni," the Sorong Disaster Mitigation Agency's head Herlin Sasabone was quoted by Indonesia's state news agency Antara as saying.

The floods occurred due to heavy rainfalls and rising sea levels, he said, adding that the widespread rains in Sorong was forecasted to occur till the end of July.

Sasabone called on the residents in landslide-prone highlands to stay alert.

"Till now, a team from the agency and village administrations are calculating the damage of residential buildings following the floods in Sorong," he said. Enditem
