Macao's restaurants, retailers business performance improves in May

MACAO, July 21 (Xinhua) -- The business of restaurants and retailers in Macao showed some improvement in May 2020, due to the supportive measures to spur the local consumption, the special administrative region's statistic service said here on Tuesday.

The latest report from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) indicated that the proportion of interviewed restaurants recording a year-on-year increase in revenue in May rose by 12 percentage points from April to 17 percent.

Meanwhile, 73 percent of the interviewed restaurants reported a year-on-year decline in revenue, a decrease of 16 percentage points from April.

As for retail trade, 16 percent of the interviewed retailers registered a year-on-year sales rise in May, an increase of 7 percentage points from April.

On the other hand, 80 percent of the interviewed retailers recorded a year-on-year sales decrease, down by 7 percentage points from the preceding month.

In terms of the business outlook for June, the proportion of interviewed restaurants expecting their revenue to increase year-on-year or remain steady rose by 6 percentage points from May to 25 percent, while the corresponding share for retailers went down by 1 percentage point to 21 percent.

Meanwhile, there were 33 percent of the interviewed restaurants and 46 percent of the retailers anticipating a year-on-year decline of fifty percent or more in revenue, down by 5 percentage points and 4 percentage points respectively from May. Enditem
