TOKYO -- Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike on Wednesday urged residents of the capital to refrain from going out unnecessarily during the upcoming four-day weekend amid a spike in COVID-19 cases in Tokyo and as the nationwide daily tally hit a new record.

HONG KONG -- China's Hong Kong will mandate face masks in all indoor public places and add two countries including the United States to the high-risk list, as its daily increase of COVID-19 cases hit a new high on Wednesday.

Starting Thursday, people will be required to wear face masks in all indoor public areas, including shopping malls, supermarkets, building lobbies and bus terminus, Sophia Chan, secretary for food and health of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government, told a press conference on Wednesday. DHAKA -- At least 86 people died in Bangladesh floods triggered by heavy seasonal rains and onrush of water from hills across the Indian borders that worsened again this week, official figures showed Wednesday.

According to the daily flood situation report of country's disaster response coordination center, "the floods till date since June 30 caused the deaths of 86 people in 21 (out of 64) districts." (Bangladesh-Flood-Toll)

DHAKA -- Bangladesh reported 2,744 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, taking the total to 213,254, with 2,751 deaths so far.

Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana said in a briefing on Wednesday afternoon that 42 more deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh, bringing the total fatalities to 2,751.

MANILA -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 72,269 after the country's Department of Health (DOH) reported 1,594 new cases on Wednesday.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries further rose to 23,623 after 342 more patients have survived the disease.
