BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

UNITED NATIONS -- World leaders will not be coming to New York for their annual gathering in September for the first time in the 75-year history of the United Nations because of the coronavirus pandemic, a UN spokesperson confirmed on Thursday.

The General Debate of the General Assembly, traditionally the most high-profile UN event of the year, will be a slimmed-down affair this September, with world leaders staying away from New York, and contributing set-piece speeches via video link, Reem Abaza, spokesperson for the president of the General Assembly, Tijjani Muhammad-Bande, told reporters at a press briefing.

NEW YORK -- The number of COVID-19 cases in the United States surpassed the 4 million mark Thursday to reach 4,005,414 as of 3:04 p.m. local time (1904 GMT), according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

Meanwhile, the national death toll from the disease rose to 143,820, according to the CSSE.

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Brazil on Thursday said it registered 59,961 new COVID-19 cases in the previous 24 hours, its second-highest one-day increase.

A day earlier, it reported a record 67,860 new cases in a single day.

The latest new cases took the country's total caseload to 2,287,475, the Health Ministry said.

WASHINGTON -- U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that he is canceling the Jacksonville, Florida component of the upcoming Republican National Convention (RNC) over the coronavirus outbreak.

"The timing for this event is not right. It's just not right with what has happened recently, the flare-up in Florida," he said during a press briefing at the White House. "To have a big convention, it's not the right time."

BEIJING -- Chinese health authority said Friday that it received reports of 21 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Thursday, 15 of which were domestically transmitted.

Of the domestically transmitted cases, 13 were reported in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and two were in Liaoning Province, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

CAIRO -- Egypt witnessed on Thursday its highest single-day recoveries from COVID-19, as 991 patients were cured and discharged from hospitals, bringing the total recoveries in the country to 31,066, said the Egyptian Health Ministry.

On the same day, 40 patients died from the novel coronavirus, marking the lowest daily fatalities in nearly six weeks and raising the death toll to 4,480, Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said in a statement.

JERUSALEM -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in Israel reached 57,982, with 1,897 new cases recorded on Thursday, the state's Ministry of Health said.

The death toll rose to 442, with 12 new deaths, the highest daily figure since April 18, when 13 patients died from the COVID-19 infection.

The number of patients in serious condition increased from 273 to 301, out of 701 patients currently hospitalized.

SANTIAGO -- Chile on Thursday reported a total of 338,759 people have tested positive for COVID-19 and 8,838 have died from the disease.

According to the Health Ministry, in the previous 24 hours, tests detected 2,371 new cases of infection and 116 more COVID-19 patients died.

Of the new infections, 1,841 presented symptoms and 379 were asymptomatic. Enditem
