Slovenia's retail sales down 9.6 pct in H1

LJUBLJANA, July 27 (Xinhua) -- Retail sales in Slovenia declined by 9.6 pct year-on-year in the first half of 2020 as the coronavirus epidemic shut down most stores for several weeks in spring, according to data released Monday by the Statistical Office of Slovenia.

The steepest annual decline in retail sales was registered in April (-22.7 percent) and March (-14.6 percent) due to the epidemic. Volume turnover in retail trade in June was 3.0 percent higher than in May 2020, but down 5.0 percent from June 2019.

Lower sales were reported across all segments of retail for the six-month period. It fell the most in specialized stores with motor fuels down 20.9 percent as people drove less and public transportation was brought to a standstill.

Compared with June 2019, turnover in retail trade except automotive fuel increased 0.7 percent in June 2020, while in retail trade with non-food products it gained 7.7 percent. Turnover in retail trade with food in June decreased by 8.4 percent.

Slovenia reported 5 new coronavirus infections over the past day, according to the latest official figures on Monday. The total number of confirmed infections now stands at 2,087, and death toll remains at 116. Enditem
