RAMALLAH/GAZA, July 28 (Xinhua) -- After a five-month closure following the outbreak of COVID-19 in the Palestinian territories, schools in Palestine will reopen in September, a senior Palestinian official said on Tuesday.

Marwan Awartani, the Palestinian Minister of Education, told a news briefing in Ramallah that schools in Palestine will restart on Sept. 6, "unless something urgent breaks out amid coronavirus crisis."

He added that the coronavirus crisis had influenced education at schools and obliged all educational institutions to carry out online learning for the safety of Palestinian students.

"The plan of the return to schools goes in harmony with a comprehensive health protocol based on certain conditions that all schools, universities, and other education institutions must abide by," said the minister.

Awartani clarified the protocol includes physical distancing, wearing facemasks and gloves, and sterilization.

However, the education ministry in the Gaza Strip, the enclave that the Islamic Hamas movement rules, has announced that schools there would reopen in the first week of August. Enditem
