TIRANA, July 28 (Xinhua) -- The mayor of Albanian capital Tirana, Erion Veliaj, said on Tuesday that he tested positive for COVID-19.
Via a message on Facebook, Veliaj said that after taking the test, he was confirmed positive.
"I am in good health, as is my family. But, from today I will continue to work from home with the same dedication for Tirana," Veliaj wrote.
The mayor underlined that no one is immune to the virus, calling for everyone "to wash their hands as often as possible and wear a mask to protect oneself and family."
In his reaction to the news, President Ilir Meta wished Veliaj a quick recovery via a Facebook message.
In his message, Meta also appealed to all citizens to respect health protocols in order to prevent further spread of COVID-19 pandemic.
"I call on all citizens to follow the instructions made public for wearing masks and respecting physical distances, especially as the peak of the tourist season approaches," Meta said.
"Considering the alarming pace of increasing cases of affected citizens, unfortunately the number of victims as well," Meta asked for "a more efficient and transparent strategy to cope with the serious consequences of this dangerous pandemic."
On Tuesday, local media reported that three members of the Albanian parliament have tested positive for COVID-19 as well.
On Tuesday, health authorities reported 117 new coronavirus cases, bringing the total in the country to 4,997, with 2,789 recoveries and 148 fatalities. Enditem
