BEIJING, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BEIJING -- A key metric of epidemic prevention improved dramatically soon after China launched massive testing and isolation efforts against the coronavirus, according to a study published recently in Science magazine.

Serial intervals, which measure the average time between the onset of symptoms in a chain of people infected by a pathogen, have shrunk substantially from 7.8 days to 2.6 days in around a month in mainland China, driven by intensive non-pharmaceutical interventions, in particular case isolation, the study said.

HARARE -- Zimbabwe recorded 62 new COVID-19 cases and one death on Wednesday, bringing the country's total cases to 2,879 and the death toll to 41.

The country also recorded a significant number of recoveries at 283, raising the total number of recoveries from 604 to 887.

ACCRA -- The number of people infected by the new coronavirus in Ghana has increased to 35,142, with 736 more infections confirmed early Thursday, said the Ghana Health Service.

It said the number of recovered and discharged cases increased to 31,286, with 665 more infected people discharged after treatment.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's COVID-19 cases rose to 234,889 on Thursday with nearly 2,700 new cases reported, and deaths from the virus increased to 3,083.

Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana said in a briefing that 2,695 new COVID-19 positive cases and 48 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

SUVA -- The economic damage caused by COVID-19 will continue to affect Fiji's economy into 2021, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) said on Thursday.

According to Fiji Broadcasting Corporation, the ADB said in its Pacific Economic Monitor launched on Thursday that the impact of COVID-19 on Fiji's tourism industry and its related sectors is projected to result in negative 16 percentage points to the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2020.

JAKARTA -- The number of COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 1,904 within one day to 106,336, with the death toll adding by 83 to 5,058, the health ministry said on Thursday.

The ministry added that 2,154 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 64,292. The latest number of suspected cases across the country is 53,723.

WASHINGTON -- The United States failed to recognize the coronavirus threat from Europe in time, Robert Redfield, director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), has said.

Since the country's COVID-19 epidemic broke out, the United States has reported over 4.4 million confirmed cases and over 150,000 deaths.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 5,509 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 834,499, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement Thursday.

Meanwhile, 129 new deaths were reported, taking the nationwide count to 13,802, according to the statement.

NEW YORK -- Global COVID-19 cases have surpassed 17 million on Thursday, the most recent statistics of the Center for Systems Science and Engineering at Johns Hopkins University showed.

The global count reached 17,029,155 with a total of 667,011 deaths, according to the latest data.

BEIJING -- Chinese health authority said Thursday that it received reports of 105 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Wednesday, including 102 domestically transmitted cases and three imported ones.

Ninety-six of the 102 domestically transmitted cases were reported in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, five in Liaoning Province, and one in Beijing Municipality, the National Health Commission said in its daily report, adding that one new suspected COVID-19 case imported from abroad was reported in Shanghai Municipality.
