JAKARTA, July 30 (Xinhua) -- The world's best surfers are expected to compete in the globe's most prestigious surfing championship in Indonesia's East Java province next year.

The World Surf League (WSL) is scheduled to be held in Banyuwangi district's Plengkung Beach, which will have the world's second best waves for surfing in July 2021, Indonesian Tourism and Creative Economy Minister Wishnutama Kusubandio said in a statement issued on Thursday.

"We fully support the World Surf League, including preparations for the infrastructure," he said during a coordinating meeting for the event on Wednesday evening.

Kusubandio said that the sports event, which features surfers from several countries, would help promote tourism in the province.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Maritime and Investment Affairs Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan expects that the transmission of the COVID-19 would slow next year and that conditions would make the international sports event a success.

Plengkung Beach has huge waves with the height of up to eight meters and 2km long coastline, according to the district's administration.

Indonesia has reopened tourism destinations gradually, employing a tight implementation of health protocols to protect visitors. Enditem
