LONDON, July 31 (Xinhua) -- The reigning world champion and world number one Judd Trump came from 5-2 down to knock out qualifier Tom Ford 10-8 in the first round at the Snooker World Championship on Friday.

The tournament unveiled in Sheffield on Friday were expected to welcome a reduced crowd every session throughout the 16-day event as a pilot sports event for the safe return of spectators in October but has to close the doors again from Saturday.

The British government announced Friday a halt on easing restrictions due to a spike in COVID-19 cases in England. It means that fans here will not be allowed to attend pilot sports events as planned until at least August 15.

Trump was outplayed by Ford in the morning session but managed to improve his performance to reach the round of 16. The 30-year-old will meet the winner between China's hopeful Yan Bingtao and Elliot Slessor.

China's top player Ding Junhui led Mark King 5-4. The second session of the duo will resume on Saturday.

Stuart Bingham led Ashley Cart 5-4 while Mark Williams trailed Alan McManus 5-4. Enditem
