Live COVID-19 updates: Africa's COVID-19 cases pass 900,000 mark

BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

ADDIS ABABA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases across the African continent reached 908,931 on Friday, the Africa Center for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) said.

The Africa CDC, a specialized healthcare agency of the 55-member African Union (AU) Commission in its latest situation update issued on Friday, said that the region registered 17,732 new positive cases from Thursday to Friday.

DOHA -- The Qatari Health Ministry on Friday announced 235 new COVID-19 infections, raising the total number of confirmed cases in the Gulf state to 110,695, official Qatar News Agency (QNA) reported.

Meanwhile, 242 more recovered from the virus, bringing the total recoveries to 107,377, while the death toll increased by three to 174, according to a ministry statement quoted by QNA.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health reported 396 new COVID-19 cases on Friday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 52,205.

Of the new cases, three are imported cases, three are community cases and the rest are linked with the dormitories of foreign workers.

Among them, 99 percent are linked to known clusters, while the rest are pending contact tracing.

BAGHDAD -- The Iraqi Health Ministry on Friday recorded 3,346 new COVID-19 cases, the highest daily increase since the outbreak of the disease, while a health official confirmed that the authorities will return to partial curfew after the Eid al-Adha holiday.

The new cases brought the total nationwide infections to 124,609, as the ministry's health teams and institutions have used over 1,000,000 testing kits so far, the ministry said in a statement.

NAIROBI -- A total of 723 new COVID-19 cases were reported in Kenya on Friday, raising the national tally to 20,636 as preparations to resume international flights on Saturday went into top gear.

Mutahi Kagwe, cabinet secretary for health, said that 700 Kenyans and 23 foreigners were confirmed positive to the disease after 8,679 samples were tested in the last 24 hours, bringing cumulative tests to 303,959.

BEIJING -- Chinese Vice Premier Sun Chunlan has stressed the preparation for COVID-19 prevention and control in autumn and winter to resolutely prevent an epidemic resurgence.

Sun made the remarks on Friday at a teleconference of the State Council joint prevention and control mechanism against COVID-19.

KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait on Friday reported 428 new COVID-19 cases and two more deaths, raising the tally of infections to 66,957 and the death toll to 447, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Currently, 8,578 patients are receiving treatment, including 134 in ICU, the statement added. Enditem
