BEIJING, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

DHAKA -- Abiding by the recommended health advice to prevent the spread of COVID-19 pandemic, Bangladeshi Muslims with the spirit of sacrifice on Saturday celebrated Eid-al-Adha, one of the two major festivals in the country, but refrained from traditional hugs, embraces and handshakes with each other.

Long lines of Muslims have been seen since Saturday morning in front of the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka for Eid prayers.

TAIPEI -- Seven people tested positive for COVID-19 in Taiwan Saturday, raising the island's total number of COVID-19 cases to 474, the local epidemic monitoring agency said.

Six of the new patients contracted the virus outside Taiwan while the infection source of the last case remained unclear, the agency said in a press release.

MINSK -- Belarus reported 138 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on Saturday, taking its total to 67,946, according to the country's health ministry.

There have been 242 new recoveries in the past 24 hours, bringing the total to 62,686, the ministry added.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh's COVID-19 cases rose to nearly 240,000 on Saturday, with about 2,200 new cases reported, and deaths from the virus increased to 3,132.

Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana said in a briefing that "2,199 new COVID-19 positive cases and 21 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh."

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 5,462 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 845,443, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement on Saturday.

Meanwhile, 95 new deaths were reported, taking the nationwide count to 14,058, according to the statement.

MANILA -- The number of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) cases in the Philippines surged to 98,232 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 4,963 new cases on Saturday, making a record daily increase for the third consecutive days.

The DOH reported 3,954 new cases on Thursday and 4,063 new cases on Friday.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 1,560 within one day to 109,936, with the death toll adding by 62 to 5,193, the country's health ministry said on Saturday.

The ministry said 2,012 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 67,919. Enditem
