DAMASCUS, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- An Israeli warplane targeted four suspected militants on the Syrian border with the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights in southern Syria on Monday, a war monitor reported.

The four were either killed or wounded and are likely from a local resistance movement against Israel, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The Britain-based watchdog group said the four were near the separating fence when they were targeted.

There has been no immediate reaction from Damascus, but the Israeli army reportedly acknowledged targeting the four militants on the border, saying they were trying to plant explosives.

Israel seized the Golan Heights from Syria during the 1967 Middle East war and annexed it in 1981.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes in Syria, targeting military positions of the Syrian army and its allies of pro-Iran fighters, including the Lebanese Hezbollah group. Enditem
