UN says over 9,000 displaced by unrest in Ethiopia's Oromia region

ADDIS ABABA, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- More than 9,000 people have been displaced by the unrest last month in Oromia regional state, in central Ethiopia, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said on Monday.
"The protests also impacted humanitarian operations, consequently affecting food deliveries and critical operations, including COVID-19 activities," the UNOCHA said in a report.
The unrest in Oromia has dramatically decreased testing for COVID-19 and disrupted contact tracing of suspected cases, the report said.
Last month, protests, sometimes violent, erupted in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, as well as various cities and towns in Oromia regional state, after popular Oromo singer Hachalu Hundessa was killed on June 29 by unknown people in Addis Ababa.
The government said 239 people were killed and nearly 10,000 others arrested in the unrest. Enditem
