MADRID, Aug. 3 (Xinhua) -- The Spanish government confirmed on Monday that it was going to create a new office under a Secretary of State to help control new outbreaks of COVID-19.

The measure was confirmed in Official State Bulletin (BOE) on Monday and also by a post by Health Minister Salvador Illa on social media.

Illa explained that the new office would help strengthen the "top-level management structure" and decision making at his ministry at a moment when Spain is struggling to control a series of new outbreaks of COVID-19 following the easing of lockdown restrictions on June 21.

The new office in the ministry is intended to help central government work more closely with Spain's 17 Autonomous Communities to deal more effectively with new outbreaks.

"The incorporation of a new Secretary of State in these activities... will help to substantially improve the coordination and cooperation between the respective public administrations and strengthen the actions of the Health Ministry with the creation of a body that has the correct level to carry out such discussions," explains the ministry in a press communique.

Since June 21, the Health Ministry has reported over 600 localized outbreaks of COVID-19. In the past 14 days, around 27,000 new cases had been diagnosed. Enditem
