RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 4 (Xinhua) -- Paris Saint-Germain's Brazilian defender Marquinhos said Tuesday he would be honored to replace compatriot Thiago Silva as the club captain.

Silva's contract with PSG expires this month and current vice-captain Marquinhos is the favorite to assume the French side's on-field leadership.

"It's not something that I'm looking out for. I think it has to happen naturally," the 26-year-old told Brazilian news outlet Globo Esporte.

"It would be an honor. But our captain is still Thiago Silva. I'm vice-captain and I try to help out as much as possible."

Marquinhos added that the club's hierarchy had yet to indicate who would be Silva's successor.

The center back has made 280 first-team appearances for PSG since joining the club from Roma in 2013 and is widely regarded as one of the best defenders in Europe.

He left open the possibility of returning to original club Corinthians, with whom he played just 14 times at senior level before his move to Europe.

"My time at Corinthians was brief. I'd like to be an important player for them one day. But I'm not thinking about that now. Maybe in the future that will happen," Marquinhos added. Enditem
