TOKYO, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- Tokyo stocks closed lower Wednesday as investors opted to take profits following the Nikkei's almost 4 percent rise over the past two days, although hopes for the Bank of Japan's purchases of exchanged-traded funds helped trim losses.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average dropped 58.81 points, or 0.26 percent, from Tuesday to close the day at 22,514.85.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, shed 0.55 point, or 0.04 percent, to finish at 1,554.71.

Air transportation, land transportation, and information and communication issues comprised those that declined the most by the close of play. Enditem
