Live COVID-19 Updates: Tokyo sees daily COVID-19 cases top 200 for 9th day

BEIJING, Aug. 5 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

TOKYO -- The Tokyo metropolitan government confirmed 263 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, while a resurgence of cases in Aichi Prefecture has seen a state of emergency to be declared in the central Japanese region.

Tokyo's latest figure marks the ninth consecutive day that new daily cases have topped 200, but the number of infections has dropped from the previous day's tally of 309 and retreated from its record 472 cases reported Saturday.

Of the 263 latest cases, those testing positive in their 20s and 30s comprised 163 people, accounting for around 62 percent of the total.

TBILISI -- Georgia confirmed 15 new COVID-19 cases on Wednesday, bringing its total to 1,197, the country's center for disease control said.

Three of the 15 new cases are imported, NCDC said.

As of Wednesday, 974 of the 1,197 patients have recovered, while 17 others have died, the center said.

KUALA LUMPUR -- Malaysia reported 21 new COVID-19 infections, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday, bringing the national total to 9,023.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press statement that 15 cases are imported and the other six are local transmissions.

Another 18 cases have been released, bringing the total cured and discharged to 8,702 or 96.4 percent of all cases.

DHAKA -- Bangladesh Wednesday reported 33 more deaths and over 2,654 new COVID-19 cases.

Senior Health Ministry official Nasima Sultana said in a briefing on Wednesday that "the number of confirmed infections in the country totaled 246,674 while fatalities stood at 3,267."

According to the official, 11,160 samples were tested in the last 24 hours in labs across the country.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong's Center for Health Protection (CHP) reported 85 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 on Wednesday, the third day when the daily additional cases fell below 100.

The newly-reported cases, including three imported cases and 82 local infections, brought the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in China's Hong Kong Special Administrative Region to 3,754.

PHNOM PENH -- Cambodia on Wednesday confirmed two new imported COVID-19 cases, raising the total number of infections in the country to 243, said a Health Ministry's statement.

One case was detected on a 42-year-old Kazakhstani woman, who arrived in Phnom Penh, capital of Cambodia, on Monday from Kazakhstan via a connecting flight in South Korea, the statement said.

MOSCOW -- Russia registered 5,204 new COVID-19 cases in the past 24 hours, taking its total to 866,627, the country's COVID-19 response center said in a statement Wednesday.

Meanwhile, 139 new deaths were reported, taking the nationwide count to 14,490.

Moscow, the country's worst-hit region, reported 687 newly confirmed cases, taking its tally of infections to 244,784, the response center said.

JAKARTA -- The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 1,815 within one day to 116,871, with the death toll adding by 64 to 5,452, the Health Ministry said on Wednesday.

According to the ministry, 1,839 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 73,889.

ULAN BATOR -- Mongolia reported 14 more COVID-19 recoveries, bringing total recoveries to 244, the country's National Center for Communicable Diseases (NCCD) said Wednesday.

The recovered people are servicemen of the Mongolian Armed Forces who returned home from Afghanistan on a chartered flight in mid-July, Amarjargal Ambaselmaa, head of the surveillance department of the NCCD, said at a daily press conference.

MANILA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 115,980 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,462 new cases on Wednesday.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries further rose to 66,270 after it reported 222 patients having survived the disease.

The death toll also increased to 2,123 after nine more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, the DOH said. Enditem
