COLOMBO -- Sri Lanka's Elections Chief Mahinda Deshapriya on Wednesday said that the parliamentary elections held during the day ended peacefully as the voting concluded at 5 p.m. local time with over a 70 percent voter turnout reported from across the country.

HONG KONG -- The Hong Kong Volunteers Federation announced on Wednesday that it is willing to send about 10,000 volunteers to assist the medical supportive teams from the mainland in logistics work in Hong Kong.

The medical professionals, who arrived in Hong Kong on Sunday afternoon, are members of a 60-strong nucleic acid testing team established recently at the request of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government for assistance in the battle against the COVID-19 epidemic.

MALE -- New restrictions have been placed on travel into and out of the Greater Male region of the Maldives as the country's COVID-19 cases continue to rise amid a possible second wave, local media reported on Wednesday.

BANGKOK -- Thai police on Wednesday reported that anti-narcotics authorities have cracked down on a suspected drug trafficking ring, with members consisting mostly from the hill tribes in Thailand's north.

DHAKA -- At least 17 travellers were killed and one missing after a boat capsized in a wetland in Bangladesh's Netrokona district, some 158 km north of the capital Dhaka on Wednesday, a senior police official said.
