BEIJING, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore's Ministry of Health reported 301 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 54,555.

Of the new cases, four are imported cases, four are community cases and the rest are linked with the dormitories of foreign workers.

Among the new cases, 98 percent are linked to known clusters, while the rest are pending contact tracing.

NAIROBI -- Kenya's total number of COVID-19 cases passed the 24,000 mark on Thursday after 538 more people tested positive from 6,195 samples in the last 24 hours, the ministry of health said.

Rashid Aman, chief administrative secretary in the Ministry of Health told journalists in Nairobi that the east African nation now has 24,411 COVID-19 cases.

KUWAIT CITY -- Kuwait on Thursday reported 620 new COVID-19 cases and one more death, raising the tally of infections to 70,045 and the death toll to 469, the Health Ministry said in a statement.

Currently, 7,966 patients are receiving treatment, including 127 in ICU, the statement added.

The ministry also announced the recovery of 704 more patients, raising the total recoveries in the country to 61,610.

TIRANA -- Albania's confirmed COVID-19 cases reached 6,016 on Thursday after health authorities reported a total of 127 new infections in the last 24 hours, the Institute of Public Health said.

So far, the COVID-19 pandemic has claimed the lives of 188 people, up by six in the past 24 hours.

According to health authorities, 3,155 patients diagnosed with COVID-19 disease have recovered, while 2,673 cases are still active.

WASHINGTON -- Governor Mike DeWine of U.S. midwestern state of Ohio, a key swing state in the 2020 U.S. elections, announced on social media on Thursday that he has tested positive for coronavirus.

"As part of the standard protocol to greet President Trump on the tarmac in Cleveland, I took a COVID test. I tested positive," DeWine tweeted.

GENEVA -- Six COVID-19 vaccine candidates, including three from China, have entered phase-3 trials, a senior World Health Organization (WHO) official said on Thursday.

The three Chinese candidates are from Sinovac, Wuhan Institute of Biological Products/Sinopharm and Beijing Institute of Biological Products/Sinopharm, said Michael Ryan, executive director of the WHO Health Emergencies Program, at a virtual briefing

GENEVA -- The COVID-19 death toll worldwide has surpassed 700,000, reaching 701,754 as of Thursday, according to the latest number from the World Health Organization (WHO).

Globally, as of 12:00 p.m. CEST (1000 GMT) on Thursday, 18,575,326 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been reported to the WHO.

The United States and Brazil remain the top two in both confirmed cases and deaths, with 4,728,239 cases and 156,050 deaths reported from the U.S., and 2,801,921 cases and 95,819 deaths from Brazil. Enditem
