QUITO, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- The Ecuadorean Ministry of Public Health reported on Thursday 1,671 new cases of COVID-19 and 30 more deaths in the last 24 hours, bringing te total caseload to 90,537 and the death toll to 5,877.

Additionally, the country registered another 3,530 deaths likely caused by the disease, but not confirmed due to a lack of evidence.

Quito, the current epicenter of COVID-19 in Ecuador, continues to register a sustained growth of infections, with 14,857 confirmed cases so far. Authorities attribute the increase in the capital city to residents' non-compliance with the imposed curfew and other preventive health measures.

On Wednesday, some of the Ecuadorian beaches were reopened after five months of quarantine, in a bid to reactivate the tourism sector. Enditem
