HONG KONG, Aug. 6 (Xinhua) -- Asia-Pacific countries are reporting increasing number of COVID-19 cases as the total cases in the Philippines near 120,000, while India's coronavirus deaths surpassed 40,000-mark on Thursday as tally topped 1.9 million.

The death toll in India due to COVID-19 reached 40,699, as the total tally reached 1,964,536, said the data released by the federal health ministry.

During the past 24 hours, 56,282 new COVID-19 cases and 904 new deaths were reported across the country.

According to the data, 1,328,336 people have been successfully treated and discharged from hospitals while there are 595,501 active cases in various hospitals across the country.

Thursday was the seventh consecutive day when over 50,000 new cases were registered in the country.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 119,460 after the country's Department of Health (DOH) reported 3,561 new daily cases.

The DOH said the number of recoveries further rose to 66,837 after 569 more patients have survived the disease, and the death toll increased to 2,150 after adding 28 more deaths.

Bangladesh reported about 3,000 new cases on Thursday taking the total to nearly 250,000, with over half of the patients having recovered in the country so far.

The latest figures reported by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) under the Ministry of Health showed 2,977 new cases and 39 deaths in the last 24 hours across Bangladesh.

The number of confirmed infections in the country totaled 249,651 while fatalities stood at 3,306, showed the official data.

The COVID-19 cases in Indonesia rose by 1,882 within one day to 118,753, with the death toll adding by 69 to 5,521, the country's health ministry said.

According to the ministry, 1,756 more people were discharged from hospitals, bringing the total number of recovered patients to 75,645.

The virus has spread to all the country's 34 provinces. Within the past 24 hours, capital Jakarta recorded 556 new cases.

Afghan Ministry of Public Health confirmed 108 new cases, bringing the total number of infections in the country to 36,937.

A total of 753 tests were conducted within the past 24 hours, and 108 were found positive in 11 provinces out of 34 Afghan provinces, the ministry said in a statement.

Four patients died during the period, taking the death toll to 1,298, the statement said.

South Korea reported 43 more cases as of 0:00 a.m. Thursday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 14,499.

The daily caseload stayed above 40 in eight days due to small cluster infections and imported cases.

No more death was confirmed, leaving the death toll at 302. The total fatality rate stood at 2.08 percent.

Malaysia reported 15 new infections, the Health Ministry said, bringing the national total to 9,038.

Health Ministry Director-General Noor Hisham Abdullah said in a press briefing that five cases are imported and 10 more are local transmissions.

Another 11 cases have been released, bringing the total cured and discharged to 8,713 or 96.4 percent of all cases. Enditem
