BUDAPEST, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Tourism nights spent in commercial accommodation establishments in Hungary plunged by 61 percent year-on-year in the first half of the year, according to data published by the country's central statistical office (KSH) on Friday.
As a result of the coronavirus epidemic, "in January to June, international tourists spent 66 percent and domestic tourists 54 percent fewer nights in commercial accommodation establishments compared to the same period of the previous year," KSH said in a statement.
In June, the number of foreign arrivals and foreign tourism nights both decreased by 93 percent, with 41,000 guests spending 101,000 tourism nights in accommodation establishments, KSH added.
Domestic tourism in Hungary restarted operations in May thanks to the gradual lifting of the coronavirus restrictions, the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTU) has said. But international arrivals for tourism purposes, including those from China, "were almost completely missing in May."
"Chinese tourists represented 5-6 percent of the total guest traffic, most of whom arrived in Budapest in groups," it said.
According to the China National Tourist Office in Budapest, 277,389 Chinese tourists visited Hungary in 2019. Enditem
