LISBON, Aug. 7 (Xinhua) -- Portuguese President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said on Friday that all major events scheduled to take place this year in Portugal are "welcome, as long as they respect public health rules."

Speaking to journalists during his vacation on Madeira Island, the president said that despite the COVID-19 pandemic, "everything that can be done in Portugal, which is attractive in terms of tourism, is welcome."

He highlighted the importance for Portugal of the "Madeira Wine Rally," one of the stages of the European Rally Trophy, organized by the International Automobile Federation (FIA) that started Friday on Madeira Island.

In addition to this event, the capital Lisbon will also host, starting Friday, the quarterfinals, semifinals and the grand final of the 2019/20 UEFA Champions League Football 2019/20.

The president recalled that Portugal will receive the Formula 1 Grand Prix on Oct. 25, in the city of Portimao, as well as the "Masters" of golf tournament on Oct. 21, in the city of Loule, both in the region of Algarve.

"Events are appearing, as long as they are compatible with health rules," he said.

"Nobody knows yet how the pandemic will evolve and, therefore, we will wait to see if there is a second wave or no second wave... But we will talk about it after the holidays," he concluded. Enditem
