KIGALI, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- Rwandans on Friday marked the annual harvest day locally known as "Umuganura" in their homes amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The festival, celebrated every first Friday of the month of August, is a cultural event at the beginning of every harvest to celebrate crop harvest.

Unlike previous ones, no mass gatherings were organized to celebrate the festival this year, but a week of various discussions about Rwanda's traditional culture were held through different media platforms.

The current festival is no longer only focused on crop harvest alone but also achievements in various aspects such as agriculture, health, education, and industry, Rwandan Minister of Youth and Culture Rosemary Mbabazi said in a talk show on the national broadcaster Rwanda Television.

Umuganura should be celebrated through sharing of achievements and committing to safeguard them, she said.

The minister also urged parents to teach children the local language Kinyarwanda as part of the family culture.

She also urged economically well-off families to share with their poor neighbors and work toward national unity. Enditem
