Live COVID-19 updates: COVID-19 cases in Americas surpass 10 mln -- WHO

BEIJING, Aug. 8 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

GENEVA -- The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Americas has crossed the 10 million mark, accounting for over half of the global tally, according to data released by the World Health Organization (WHO) on Friday.

As of 10 a.m. CET (0800 GMT) on Friday, 154,118 new COVID-19 cases had been reported in the Americas during the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to 10,135,322, which took up more than 50 percent of the global tally -- 18,902,735. Meanwhile, 4,598 deaths from the COVID-19 infection had been recorded in the region, bringing the total fatalities to 376,606, the data showed.

MANILA -- The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 126,885 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 4,226 new daily cases on Saturday.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries further rose to 67,117 after it reported additional 287 patients have survived the disease.

BEIRUT -- Lebanon has confirmed a record high of 279 new COVID-19 cases across the country in the past 24 hours till Friday after two massive blasts here left hospitals overwhelmed.

The number of COVID-19 infections has reached 5,951, while the death toll stood at 70, the Lebanese Health Ministry said.

WUHAN -- Central China's Hubei Province reported one newly imported COVID-19 case and no increase in domestically transmitted cases Friday, the provincial health commission said Saturday.

The confirmed patient, arriving at Wuhan Tianhe International Airport from Tajikistan on Thursday, was put under quarantine upon arrival and diagnosed as a confirmed case on Friday.

NEW DELHI -- Total COVID-19 tally in India rose to 2,088,611 even as the number of deaths swelled to 42,518, said the latest data issued by the federal health ministry on Saturday.

An increase of 61,537 new cases and 933 new deaths were recorded during the past 24 hours, the data showed.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 43 more cases of the COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Saturday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 14,562.

The daily caseload moved between 20 and 50 in recent days due to small cluster infections and imported cases.

MEXICO CITY -- Mexico reported 6,717 new COVID-19 cases within the past 24 hours, taking the national count to 469,407 cases, the country's health ministry said on Friday.

Meanwhile, 794 additional deaths were reported, taking the death toll to 51,311.

SAO PAULO -- Brazil has registered nearly 100,000 deaths from the novel coronavirus disease, the Ministry of Health reported on Friday.

The ministry said that over the last 24 hours, 1,079 deaths were reported, bringing the death toll to 99,572, and 50,230 new COVID-19 cases were registered, raising the total number of cases to 2,962,442. Enditem
