NEW YORK, Aug. 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. stocks opened mixed on Tuesday as investors digested positive news about coronavirus vaccine, but a lag in tech-tied shares weighed on the market.

Shortly after the opening bell, the Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 287.58 points, or 1.03 percent, to 28,079.02. The S&P 500 was up 16.85 points, or 0.50 percent, to 3,377.32. The Nasdaq Composite Index slipped 37.87 points, or 0.35 percent, to 10,930.49.

Boeing shares surged more than 4.5 percent in morning trading, leading the gainers in the Dow.

Shares of U.S. tech giants Microsoft and Apple, however, dipped 1.7 percent and 0.5 percent, respectively. Stocks of Facebook, Netflix and Amazon, also struggled.

The market found some support from the reports that Russian President Vladimir Putin said the country has registered the world's first vaccine against the novel coronavirus.

The news triggered optimism from investors about the race for an inoculation, experts noted.

Wall Street's major averages ended mixed in the previous session as investors eyed fiscal stimulus in the United States amid the COVID-19 crisis.

Roughly 5.1 million confirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported in the United States with fatalities topping 163,000, as of Tuesday morning local time, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Enditem
