Live COVID-19 updates: Chinese mainland reports 16 new imported COVID-19 cases

BEIJING, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

BEIJING -- The Chinese mainland reported 16 new imported COVID-19 cases Tuesday, bringing the total number of imported cases to 2,216, the National Health Commission said Wednesday.

Of the new imported cases, six were reported in Guangdong Province, four in Shanghai and one each in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region as well as the provinces of Zhejiang, Fujian, Shandong, Sichuan and Shaanxi, the commission said in its daily report.

WASHINGTON -- The United States "has failed" to contain the COVID-19, said a report by American news website Vox on Tuesday.

"It's now clear the United States has failed to contain its COVID-19 epidemic, with case counts far ahead of other developed nations and more than 1,000 deaths reported a day for over two weeks and counting," said the report titled "America's uniquely bad COVID-19 epidemic, explained in 18 maps and charts."

LOS ANGELES -- The death toll from COVID-19 in Los Angeles County, the most populous county in the United States with a population of over 10 million, surpassed 5,000 on Tuesday, hitting "a tragic milestone," local public health officials said.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health reported 63 new deaths and 1,440 new cases of COVID-19 in its daily update. The department has identified 5,057 deaths and 211,808 positive cases in the metropolitan area in California.

SYDNEY -- The Australian state of Victoria recorded another 21 deaths and 410 new COVID-19 infections on Wednesday, again breaking the record for the country's deadliest day.

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said all those who died were in their 70s or older, and 16 of the deaths were linked to the state's aged care system. Enditem
