JAKARTA, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia is targetting qualification for the main division of the FIDE Online Chess Olympiad 2020 which is being staged, Indonesian Chess Association said on Wednesday.
Being held via chess.com, the international sports event, the first online tournament organized by the International Chess Federation (FIDE), is scheduled from July 25 to August 30.
"If we look at the composition of the Indonesian team's opponent in pool A, then if we are able to enter the top three and qualify for the main division, that's good and makes us proud," the association's Chairman Utut Adianto said on Wednesday.
The tournament is participated by 163 teams from around the world, which are divided into five divisions.
The Indonesian team is grouped in the second division which is divided into five pools.
Indonesia is in pool A with Germany, Bulgaria, Belarus, Australia, Belgium, the Philippines, Bangladesh, Turkmenistan and Kyrgystan.
Comprising 11 chess players including Irene Kharisma Sukandar, Medina Warda Aulia and Gilbert Elroy Tarigan, the Indonesian team will start competing from August 14 to 16, the association noted.
FIDE has described the competition as its biggest international virtual tournament which is held in response to the postponement of its traditional Chess Olympic in August due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Enditem
