WINDHOEK, Aug. 12 (Xinhua) -- Namibia has reverted to level three of lockdown following rising cases of COVID-19 which are now above 3,000, President Hage Geingob said on Wednesday.

The migration to level three lockdown is effective from midnight of Aug. 12.

Geingob said while the decision to revert to a controlled level three for the whole country will have far reaching implications economically, it is important to safeguard lives.

"We are aware that the economy is hurting and this is why we have to take such decisions. All of us must take responsibility to protect ourselves and families," he said.

According to Geingob, there is a need for a collective decision and commitment to dealing with the pandemic.

"It is not entirely up to government to be forcing people to behave and abide by the set regulations but everyone must play their part. People are dying every day and we need to abide by the best possible measures to stop this virus, " he said.

According to the Namibian President, the government will enforce stricter measures for 16 days with the aim of driving back the pandemic and also protecting citizens. Enditem
