KANDAHAR, Afghanistan -- Five civilians were killed and six others injured as a roadside bombing struck a car in southern Afghanistan's Kandahar province on Thursday, provincial police spokesman Jamal Barikzai said.

The bomb planted by militants struck a civilian car in Dand district in the morning rush hour killing five commuters on the spot and injuring six others, the official said. All the victims including women and children are members of the same family, the official added. (Afghanistan-Bombing)

BEIJING -- An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.4 jolted 167 km south of False Pass, Alaska at 06:40:00 GMT on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

LONDON -- At least 922 healthcare workers in the United States have died of COVID-19, a recent report has found.

SYDNEY -- The number of unemployed Australians topped 1 million for the first time ever during the month of July amid the COVID-19 pandemic despite almost 115,000 jobs being created during the same period, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) said Thursday.

Between June and July, the national unemployment rate rose from 7.4 percent to 7.5 percent, an increase of 15,700 people, reaching its highest level percentage-wise since 1998, as businesses struggled with the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. (Australia-Jobless Rate) Enditem
