BEIRUT, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Lebanese President Michel Aoun on Thursday urged Brazil to assist Lebanon's reconstruction following the Beirut explosions, including providing construction materials.

"We hope that Brazil does not limit its assistance to Lebanon to humanitarian aid, because Lebanon is also in need for construction material including aluminum, glass, wood and concrete," Aoun said during his meeting with visiting former Brazilian President Michel Tamer.

Aoun explained to Tamer that the explosions took place while Lebanon is already facing the worst economic crisis in its history, the outbreak of COVID-19, in addition to hosting a big number of Syrian refugees.

Meanwhile, Tamer announced that Brazil will donate 16,000 tons of medicines to Lebanon, and 4,000 tons of rice which will arrive by sea.

He also noted that there are 10 million Brazilians of Lebanese origins who vowed to send more aid to Lebanon.

Two huge explosions rocked the Port of Beirut on Aug. 4, shaking buildings all over the Lebanese capital, killing at least 171 people and wounding 6,000 others.

The explosions served another blow to Lebanon, especially when it is already hit by its worst economic crisis in history. Enditem
