BEIJING, Aug. 15 (Xinhua) -- The following are the updates on the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

MEXICO CITY -- Restrictions on non-essential land traffic along the border between Mexico and the United States will be extended until Sept. 21 due to the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the Mexican Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.

According to the ministry, Mexico proposed the extension of the partial closure of the border for another month after reviewing the development of the pandemic in both countries.

The measure, implemented on March 21 along the common border, restricts travel for tourism or recreational purposes but permits commercial, medical and essential work-related travel.

ADEN, Yemen -- The total number of COVID-19 cases in Yemen's government-controlled provinces increased to 1,858 on Friday, as 11 new cases were officially confirmed.

The Yemeni Health Ministry said in a brief press statement that during the past 24 hours, the number of recoveries in the government-controlled areas increased to 1,009 since the outbreak of the novel coronavirus on April 10.

Also, the government announced that the death toll from the deadly respiratory disease climbed to 528 in different areas under its control, including the southern port city of Aden.

ADDIS ABABA -- Ethiopia's confirmed COVID-19 cases reached 27, 242 after 1,038 new COVID-19 positive cases were confirmed on Friday, the country's Ministry of Health said.

The ministry, in a statement issued on Friday, revealed that from a total of 17,323 medical tests that were conducted within the last 24 hours, some 1,038 of them tested positive for COVID-19, eventually bringing the total number of positive cases to 27,242.

Thirteen more patients succumbed to illnesses related to the COVID-19 pandemic on Thursday, bringing the total number of COVID-19 related deaths in the East African country to 492, according to the ministry.

DUBAI -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday announced 330 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total confirmed cases in the country to 63,819.

UAE's Ministry of Health and Prevention said in a statement the new cases of many nationalities are all in a stable condition and receiving medical treatment.

The ministry added that 101 more patients have recovered from the virus, taking the tally of recoveries in the UAE to 57,473.

WASHINGTON -- A new ensemble forecast published by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has projected up to 200,000 total COVID-19 deaths in the United States by Sept. 5.

The projection published Thursday forecast that 4,200 to 10,600 new COVID-19 deaths will be reported during the week ending Sept. 5 and that 180,000 to 200,000 total COVID-19 deaths will be reported by that date.

"State- and territory-level ensemble forecasts predict that the number of reported new deaths per week may increase over the next four weeks in Colorado and may decrease in Arizona, the Northern Mariana Islands, Vermont, and Wyoming," the CDC said on its forecasting website.

CAIRO -- Egypt registered on Friday 112 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total infections in the country to 96,220, Egyptian Health Ministry said.

It is the 13th day in a row for Egypt's COVID-19 daily infections to fall below 200, after they started to exceed 200 on April 23.

Also on Friday, 17 patients died from the respiratory disease, bringing the death toll to 5,124, Health Ministry spokesman Khaled Megahed said.

TUNIS -- The spread of COVID-19 continues in Tunisia, with 49 new domestic infections and seven imported cases during the last 24 hours, said Tunisian Ministry of Health on Friday.

It said in a statement that the total number of confirmed cases in the country reached 1,903.

A total of 1,320 patients have recovered in Tunisia while 53 deaths were reported, according to the statement.

BUENOS AIRES -- The Argentine government has extended the quarantine that has been in place since March 20 until Aug. 30 to slow the spread of COVID-19.

"We need to find a solution to the disease, and the only treatment that we have found so far is to limit the movement and the meeting of people as much as possible. Please, let's not expose ourselves," said President Alberto Fernandez during the announcement.

BEIJING -- Chinese health authority said Saturday that it received reports of 22 new confirmed COVID-19 cases on the Chinese mainland Friday, including 14 imported cases and eight locally transmitted ones.

Among the locally transmitted cases, seven were reported in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and one in Guangdong Province, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

NEW YORK -- Global COVID-19 cases surpassed 21 million on Friday, according to the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University.

The global case count reached 21,020,216, with a total of 761,393 deaths worldwide as of 3:27 p.m. local time (1927 GMT), the CSSE data showed.

The United States reported the most COVID-19 cases and deaths, standing at 5,280,315 and 167,948, respectively. Brazil recorded 3,224,876 cases and 105,463 deaths, followed by India with more than 2.4 million cases. Enditem
