NEW DELHI -- Total COVID-19 cases in India crossed the 2.5 million mark in India on Saturday, reaching 2,526,192, as the total deaths reached 49,036, showed the latest data issued by the federal health ministry.

As many as 65,002 new cases were added to the tally since Friday, while 996 people died in the past 24 hours due to the virus.

NEW DELHI -- Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said that as many as three COVID-19 vaccines are in different stages of trials in the country, and once they are finally produced, India will ramp up infrastructure for mass production of the vaccines.

Addressing the nation on the occasion of the 74th Independence Day from the ramparts of Red Fort, a historic monument in Delhi, Modi expressed hopes that the country will win the fight against the virus.

LOS ANGELES -- California, the most populous state in the United States with a population of around 40 million, became the first state in the country to have more than 600,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, authorities said Friday.

A daily report released by the California Department of Public Health showed a jump of 7,934 COVID-19 cases, which included 3,505 new infections in the last day and 4,429 from a lab-reporting backlog of previous days. Public health officials also confirmed 188 more deaths in the daily report.

BOGOTA -- The Colombian Ministry of Health and Social Protection reported on Friday that the total number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the country rose to 445,111, with 14,492 deaths.

The ministry reported that 11,306 new cases and 347 more deaths were reported, and that 41,434 tests for the disease were carried out in the last 24 hours.

SEOUL -- South Korea reported 166 more cases of COVID-19 as of 0:00 a.m. Saturday local time compared to 24 hours ago, raising the total number of infections to 15,039.

The daily caseload stayed above 100 for two straight days, marking the first time since late March that the reading jumped in triple digits for two days in a row.

BEIJING -- A fleet of trucks loaded with fresh fruits and vegetables heralded the reopening of Xinfadi, a large wholesale market of fruits, vegetables and meat, Saturday morning after its business was suspended due to a COVID-19 cluster related to the market about two months back.

More than 1,000 trucks are expected to deliver some 13,000 tonnes of fruits and vegetables to the 112-hectare market on Saturday, helping recover about 60 percent of its normal transaction volumes for fruits and vegetables.

KIGALI -- Rwanda on Friday reported a daily surge of 93 new COVID-19 cases and 46 recoveries, after a two-week downward trend in active cases.

The rise has brought the nationwide total infections and recoveries to 2,293 and 1,604, respectively.

MEXICO CITY -- Restrictions on non-essential land traffic along the border between Mexico and the United States will be extended until Sept. 21 due to the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Mexican Foreign Ministry announced on Friday.

According to the ministry, Mexico proposed the extension of the partial closure of the border for another month after reviewing the development of the pandemic in both countries.

The measure, implemented on March 21 along the common border, restricts travel for tourism or recreational purposes but permits commercial, medical and essential work-related travel. Enditem
