MACAO, Aug. 19 (Xinhua) -- China's Macao Special Administrative Region has downgraded its typhoon signal from highest No.10 level to No.8 on Wednesday at 7:30 a.m. local time, but the low-lying areas near the coastline were flooded, as Typhoon Higos had made landfall in the neighboring city of Zhuhai in the morning.

Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau had upgraded its typhoon signal to No.10 level on Wednesday at 5:00 a.m. local time, before downgrading it to No.8 later on. The red storm surge warning was also issued at 5:30 a.m. local time.

The meteorological bureau said Typhoon Higos is now located about 70 km northwest of Macao and moves away from Macao.

The low-lying areas near the coastline of Inner Harbor were flooded as some streets witnessed water depth of more than 80 centimeters. Macao's Civil Protection Operations Center urged all people staying in those areas to evacuate to safe place.

As of 10:00 a.m. local time, there were 192 people moving into Macao's 17 emergency shelters.

The electricity company had shut the power supply in low-lying areas to protect people's safety and the equipment during the flooding.

Some 185 incidents such as falling trees and advertisement boards have been reported so far, said Macao's Civil Emergency Response Center.

Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau said it will further downgrade the typhoon signal to No.3 at noon. Enditem
