BEIJING -- Chinese stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Shanghai Composite Index down 1.24 percent at 3,408.13 points.

The Shenzhen Component Index closed 2.09 percent lower at 13,480.85 points.

JAKARTA -- The IDX Composite, an index of all stocks listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX) in Jakarta, closed at 5,272.81 points on Wednesday, down by 22.36 points, or 0.42 percent against that on the previous trading day.

Approximately 12.35 billion shares worth more than 8.00 trillion Indonesian rupiahs (about 541.18 million U.S. dollars) changed hands at the stock market.

SINGAPORE -- Singapore stocks closed lower on Wednesday, with the benchmark Straits Times Index (STI) going down 0.08 percent, or 2.05 points, to close at 2,561.04.

A total of 1.85 billion shares changed hands with a turnover of 1.12 billion Singapore dollars (about 821.60 million U.S. dollars). Losers outnumbered gainers by 248 to 171.

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Malaysian stock market ended mixed here on Wednesday.

The Kuala Lumpur Composite Index (KLCI) was at 1,575.38, down 2.47 points or 0.16 percent, and the Emas was at 11,298.24, up 2.39 points or 0.02 percent.

VIENTIANE -- The Lao stock market closed on Wednesday with an increase of 0.69 percent compared to the previous trading day.

The Lao Securities Exchange composite index increased by 4.02 points, reaching 588.53 points after closing.

HONG KONG -- Hong Kong stocks closed down 188.47 points, or 0.74 percent, to 25,178.91 points on Wednesday.

The benchmark Hang Seng Index traded between 25,079.25 and 25,382.51. Turnover totaled 84.58 billion Hong Kong dollars (about 10.91 billion U.S. dollars).

SYDNEY -- The Australian share market surged on Wednesday, as strong earnings results lifted the index to a five-month high.

At the market close the benchmark S&P/ASX 200 index was up 44.20 points or 0.72 percent at 6,167.60, its highest closing level since early March, while the broader All Ordinaries index was up 45.40 points or 0.72 percent at 6,314.10.

MUMBAI -- Indian markets closed flat on a positive note on Wednesday.

Last hour profit booking erased some intraday gains but benchmark indices managed to end with marginal gains supported by the banking and financial stocks.

BANGKOK -- The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) index on Wednesday moved down 21.44 points, or 1.61 percent to close at 1,308.67 points.

Some 21.62 billion shares worth 57.28 billion baht (about 1.85 billion U.S. dollars) changed hands.

SEOUL -- South Korean shares ended higher Wednesday.

The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) gained 12.30 points, or 0.52 percent, to settle at 2,360.54. Trading volume stood at 613.4 million shares worth 12.1 trillion won (10.2 billion U.S. dollars).

WELLINGTON -- New Zealand stock market's indicator, the S&P/NZX 50 index, dropped by 1.26 percent to 11,700 on Wednesday.
